If you're struggling with past traumatic events that are impacting your mental health, you're not alone. Trauma can have a lasting effect on your life, causing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, phobias, and addiction. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available to help you overcome the negative impact of trauma. One of these treatments is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. In this blog post, we will explore what EMDR therapy is, how it works, and its benefits as a treatment option. At First Call Therapy, we understand the impact that trauma can have on your mental health and overall well-being. That's why we offer EMDR therapy as part of our range of psychology, psychotherapy, and counselling services.
EMDR therapy is a form of psychotherapy that was developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. It aims to help individuals process traumatic memories and alleviate related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
During an EMDR therapy session, the therapist guides the client through a structured series of eye movements, sounds, or taps while they recall the traumatic event. These bilateral stimuli are thought to activate the brain's natural processing mechanisms, allowing the person to reprocess the traumatic memory in a more adaptive way.
EMDR therapy works by activating the brain's natural healing processes. By recalling the traumatic event while simultaneously undergoing bilateral stimulation, the individual can process the memory in a way that reduces the distress associated with it.
The therapy also aims to identify and address any negative beliefs or emotions that may be connected to the traumatic memory. By doing so, the therapist can help the individual to reframe their thoughts and feelings in a more positive and adaptive way.
EMDR therapy has been found to be effective in treating a variety of mental health issues, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, and addiction. It is a relatively short-term treatment, typically lasting several sessions, which means that individuals can experience relief from their symptoms in a relatively short amount of time.
One of the main benefits of EMDR therapy is that it helps individuals to process traumatic memories in a more adaptive way. By doing so, they can reduce the distress associated with those memories and experience a greater sense of emotional and mental well-being.
The process of EMDR therapy typically involves eight phases. These are:
History and Treatment Planning - During this phase, the therapist and client work together to develop a treatment plan based on the client's specific needs and goals.
Preparation - The therapist prepares the client for the reprocessing of traumatic memories and teaches them coping strategies to manage any emotional distress that may arise during the therapy process.
Assessment - The therapist works with the client to identify the specific traumatic event or events that will be the focus of treatment.
Desensitisation - The client focuses on the traumatic memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones), which is believed to help the brain reprocess the memory in a more adaptive way.
Installation - The client focuses on a positive self-belief or affirmation while still engaging in bilateral stimulation, which helps to reinforce the positive thought or belief.
Body Scan - The therapist guides the client through a scan of their body to identify any residual physical sensations or tension associated with the traumatic memory.
Closure - The therapist and client review the progress made during the session and ensure the client has coping strategies to manage any remaining emotional distress.
Re-evaluation - The therapist and client review progress made over the course of treatment and identify any residual issues that may require further attention.
EMDR has been found to be effective in treating a range of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, phobias, and addiction. It is a relatively short-term treatment, typically lasting several sessions.
EMDR therapy may be right for you if you have experienced a traumatic event that is impacting your mental health and well-being. It is particularly effective for individuals who have tried other forms of therapy without success, or for those who prefer a more structured and directive approach to treatment.
However, EMDR may not be appropriate for everyone. It is important to discuss your individual needs and concerns with a qualified therapist to determine whether EMDR is a good fit for you. Additionally, EMDR may not be appropriate for individuals with certain medical or mental health conditions.
The theory behind EMDR is that when a traumatic or distressing event occurs, the brain is unable to fully process the information and emotions associated with it, leaving the person with unresolved feelings of fear, anxiety, and helplessness. EMDR aims to "reprocess" these memories, allowing the person to integrate the traumatic experience into their past, rather than being continually triggered by it in the present.
